Fortis to cover Volcanic Ash

Just had confirmation from one of my travel insurers who are underwritten by Fortis that they are to offer cover for natural catastrophies as an add on.

Natural Catastrophe

Means an event caused by the following forces of nature that has a catastrophic consequence: fire, flood, earthquake, explosion, tsunami, volcanic eruption, landslide, avalanche, hurricane, cyclone or storm.
What you are covered for

If any part of your outward, onward or return journeys are delayed, cancelled, cut short or extended as a result of a natural catastrophe, we will provide cover up to the amount shown below as follows:
· £1,500 for any non-refundable unused travel, accommodation and holiday services
· £1,500 for any reasonable additional accommodation (room only) and transport expenses
· £25 for each full 12 hours of delay up to a maximum of £250

I assume this will be a fortis standard although that I cant confirm as of yet

    Hi Steve, thats sounds good!

I rang them the other day and they said would not cover anyone for this particular incident. When did this change of heart take place? Did they mention what the likely cost will be?

    Regards

    Benjamin

Fortis are not covering the present volcanic ash problem for any policies taken out after the event. (ie. policies taken out from 15/4/10).

    This is from their website:
For People Who Have Purchased A Policy After the Event Occurred (15/4/10):

There is no cover for claims caused by any reason which was public knowledge when the policy was bought or the trip was booked.

That is what I thought as well. Steve indicated it was a policy underwritten by fortis so it's possible it's some sort of scheme. Perhaps steve could enlighten us.

  • Hi all

apologies for the delay in responding. I appreciate there is nothing on the fortis website as yet, however the policies I sell are not direct from fortis and my first post is a quote from the emails ive had from our provider, which IS underwritten by Fortis.

Im looking for some clarification as we speak however the additional cover is in place for new and im led to beleive also existing business for an additional premium.

To be honest I perhaps jumped the gun slightly and should have read Fortis website before posting but I would expect them to cover this directly soon enough unless they are testing the waters on a smaller scale first ?
