itunes wont start up

Options
Hi all.
have a problem starting up itunes.
i use Vista.
i have all of my music on an external hard drive which i had plugged out while i was away.
my problem seems to be this. the drive port that i always use to plug in the usb for this external drive remains the same, but now my computer chooses to call it K instead of M drive..
my itunes knows it as M, and as the itunes/ music folder is in there, it wont start up till it finds it.
i have tried plugging out all usbs, pluggin them back in etc, or doing it the way i thought i had it before, but it still remains as a 'k' drive. i dont have an 'm' drive listed in 'my computer' now.
can i change the destination folder to 'k' , in program files or somewhere, without starting up i tunes and perhaps short cut the problem so that at least it will start up?
or maybe find the reason why my computer has changed the name of the drive i'm using, so that i can prevent this happening in future..

many thanks for any suggestions.

With your external drive connected, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, then Disk Management.

This should give you a list of all internal and external drives connected to the PC.

Right-click on the one you're interested in, and select 'Change Drive Letters and Paths' from the sub-menu. Change the drive letter to the one you want it to be. Hopefully there's nothing there that conflicts with your choice of letter!

I seem to recall an option in there somewhere to make the change permanent, but didn't see it when I stepped thru just now.

This will do the trick for you just now, I'll see if I can find the permanent option.....
