The Mortgage Has To Go 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Liftoff!!!!

Hi new kid on the block who wants to get rid of the 30k mortgage i have currently have, ive seen the blogs so here is my own i hope i dont put you all to sleep you have all inspired me to do this thanking all and every one of you!!

I am a man who up until a month ago was happily married to a lovely woman (me 40 and her 36) we had been married for 4 years and together 8 when one Thursday evening i returned from a hellish day in the office to find (this is totally no joke and only 8 months later can i type this) my wife and her friend (yep of the female variety) in my bed together, long story short she left along with my bank book and our joint account savings (took me a month to even think to check) of approx 24k, so onwards by almost 9 months i can finally write this and on the up side i find myself at night reading some very inspiring stories on here, thankfully our 2 bedroom house we resided in was mine which i had bought long before we met and only has 30k to pay on it so im challenging all my energy into something positive to pay off my mortgage as soon as and then take myself travelling, without sounding too dramatic i thought we were forever and she was my one and only i never dreamt in a million years that was how it would end, anyway enough of that i am on a great offset since 2003 of 0.55 above base rate so with 30k and 15 years left i want to end if by 2017 more realistically in 3 years, im putting every spare penny into it and overpaying approx 400 a month on top of £193 payment per month, anyway sorry for the war and peace but i feel so comfortable on here and you all seem such a nice bunch! thanks for listening to a sad old man well turned 40 last month so maybe not so old but determined to be mortgage free by 45!

Good luck with your challenge. It must be hard to get back on track after something like that, but you have picked a very positive way to move forward. I hope you enjoy it here and find it helpful.
  • Thanks cha97 i finally had to give up last month when the divorce was finalised i truly thought she may return to me after her 'faze' was over but instead she has told me she is too 'marry' her new partner well good luck to them at least now all financial matters are in my name so looking forward to clearing the mortgage!

At that interest rate you would need to pay about £847 a month

    Hi idontwantamortgage,

Nice to see a newbie on these forums - gives us more established people some fresh thinking.

Sorry to hear about your marriage issues - that would devastate me. I've been in a long term relationship for over 20 years.

For many financial issues, eg writing off a car, a large unexpected bill, redundancy etc - a financial solution tends to appear over time, but I'm not sure I could recover from that.

Glad to see you're channelling some positive energy into reducing the mortgage. Perhaps set a date to strive for, but also enjoy life in the mean time. Look forward to your diary updates.

    Financial Bliss.

Hello DWM - welcome to the Board. Very sorry to hear of your troubles, but well done for making a positive decision to move on and focusing on other stuff.

I started my diary on here last July... be warned, it's addictive! One of the first things I did was start checking my Nationwide mortgage account on-line - now I check it every month without fail (and frequently in-between as well, just to check on interest charges).

Look forward to hearing more from you!

Now just over 2 years we have taken on the challenge again! )(starting £237k Nov 2014) Current mortgage £232,399.82, current overpayment total £1550, years remaining= 17
  • Thanks for all your kind words yes im focusing on being mortgage free sooner rather than later, it really is addictive especially as nowadays we can pop onto our online accounts and see it in black and white, also have loved reading all your stories over the past couple of weeks this being in the incentive for me to finally sign up and do my own, its amazing the all difference backgrounds and situations of everyone, funny the things we think in life are secure and in seconds can be taken from you and then life is never the same again, but enough ramblings heres to us all mortgage free! :D
