Withdrew from course- overpaid loan!! help!!!

Options
Hi,

I withdrew from my course this year, and have been overpaid a maintenance loan. I received a letter advising that i have to make immediate payments now- but cannot afford it as i'm not working.

I'm however applying to a different instuition this year, and have been assessed for full funding.

Will this affect the amount I will receive this year? Will it be deducted from my entitlement?

Thanks!

If you cant afford to pay it back you should have never spent it the first place.

You may well find that they won't give you a loan full stop next year if you haven't paid back the old amount.

Did you only receive one year of funding?

If so, the likely outcome is they will reduce your new award to recover the overpayment.

You will need to contact them though as they won't go away!

I second the advice by Bestpud, either contact the SLC or your university's finance dept/advisers

I was in a very similar situation. I was forced for personal reasons to suspend my studies for a time so wasn't entitled to the loan from that period. Sadly Steve living expenses still exist even if you aren't studying....

At the time I wasn't really aware that I'd been overpayed, it never really occurred to me. In my mind I was still a student. I received a letter requesting immediate repayment. I rang them up though and they accepted a standing order payment towards the overpaid amount. I'd advise getting in touch as soon as possible. I found them to be very reasonable.

This happened to me- to the student loans ppl as soon as you withdraw from uni (whatever reason-mine was medical) all your rent and bills stop needing to be paid so you can just give them back what you havn't spent ;)

they said i was overpaid £671 and would deduct it from my other loan applications in future years..its never come out so might be same for you. They never seem to know what they are doing.

I did fin d out though that they cannot access your account to take money out so you wont find it just disappears.

amiehall- i have found them to be absolutely horrendous..but it does depend on your local lea.

No, the SLC doesn't think all your bills stop needing to be paid, but that's not their problem. Student loans are for students, if you stop being a student you are not entitled to them. If you quit your job you'd still have bills to pay - would you expect your employer to carry on paying you a salary?

To echo that, they're based on attendance on a course of higher education. Stop attending, start fending for yourself. Sell a kidney if needbe, but the SLC have no obligation to allow you to keep the money.
