The problem with high meat/ low grain kibble is the cost - £5+ per kilo - I feed some Orijen which is 70% meat but costs 70p to £1 a day for my large cat. Are there different types of Meowing Heads, the one I can find online is 50% meat? As Rev says, way too many dry foods contain barely any meat, totally wrong for an obligate carnivore.

According to Meowing Heads the salmon flavour is nearly 80% meat and the chicken is 51% chicken with fish and egg proteins as well:

I agree with you on the price of decent food being around £5 kilo. Feeding should work out at under 50p a day but it sounds like you've got a cat like mine. Our new cat Monty was legendary in the sanctuary for his food consumption and I swear he eats as much as the other 3 combined. He was very underweight when we got him and has put on 3 pounds in 4 weeks, at this rate he'll be HUGE.

Tripod's always been fed dry and (apart from the leg which was in no way related to food issues) is in cracking condition according to the vet. I don't tend to massively bulk buy catfood (I might stock up slightly if it's on special) purely because cats being what cats are - they'll decide they hate a food if you've got tonnes of it in stock!

Dave gets Science Plan for neutered cats (as Reccomended by my vet who claims to specialise in Nutrition amongst other things)

The real sod is that the largest bag that they do is 3.5kg which equates to 53 portions for him I can normally get discount off the sticker price, so it works out at about 37p a day :)

Theres normally a sachet or two of wet kicking about that he gets from time to time as a bit of a treat though....

Most vets are not nutritional experts & make a nice profit on their food sales!

I acknowledge what you are saying, however my vet actually advertises as a nutrition specialist. The food is available for roughly the same price as I could pay online - maybe cheaper by 1 or 2 quid on the computer - but I would rather buy from my vet and keep the good relationship we have built topped up... The fact that I can ring up and say that Dave need this, dave needs that they instantly recognise me and know his history is priceless.

  • My 4 legged fiends get whatevers cheapest at the supermarket and is dried. They have never been fed wet food or anything ''nutritionally recommended'' and my vet thinks that they are the fittest cats he has seen. Both supplement their diets by doing what comes naturally and hunting. As we live on a farm , that means that they earn their keep and stay fit......
