Phone Socket Help

Hi,

We are getting sky multiroom installed Friday and we have an issue with the current set up of our phone socket. So il try an explain:

The current phone socket has the adsl line filter going into it then the current sky cable. Obviously we would like to change this so we dont end up with another extension on that one.

So ive been lookign at this item here:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=FT46A&doy=16m8&source=15

Could we possibly on the master phone socket (we only have one through the whole house) spilt it up to two so we could have different devices going to each but still being connected to the same phone line?

Thanks for any assistance. The reason i ask is due to the phone socket being in the hall way and is quite far off the wall and it looks unsighlty so we are tyring to tidy it up :)

Darren.

    I dont think you can!
The main socket coming into your house isnt a normal socket that you can pick up in any normal DIY store!
You can however have 3 phones running off 1 phone line.

ok the maplin site does say its for a master socket at the bottom:

"Double input flush mount master socket with screw terminals for use with UK telephones. The socket dimensions are 84mm x 84mm to fit a standard electrical single pattress box. For installation by suitably qualified personnel only."

But then im no phone socket techie. Not sure i wish to phone up BT and get an enginner out will probably cost a fortune.
  • i can't tell from the picture and notes whether the socket is for 1 line coming in or 2 lines ....i suspect it is for one line and so in essence one port is the 'main port' (with a capacitor across) and next door is an 'extension port'. in laymans terms you could plug your telephone in one side and an answer machine/caller display/sky lead in the other. if that's what you want?
as this box belongs to your telephone company you obviously shouldn't replace it as per your terms and conditions....i suspect that people do via the probable instructions enclosed or by looking it up on the internet....which of course strictly speaking they shouldn't

You can run extensions via the filter, providing you don't want your broadband modem/router connected to one of them. That way you only need one filter. Connecting more than one won't 'overload' it; it doesn't work like that.

You only have one 'master' socket, hence the name. This is provided by your telco and legally you should not do anything to it, apart from connecting your extensions to it, if it is an NTE5 type, like this:

So does your broadband plug in in the hall and is this OK?

If it is, then you could get this to replace your corded filter:

Thanks for the information dave. I know ou can have upto four extensions from the main socket. The reason i need it split is due to how far all the extensions make it come out from the wall. Where could i find the socket you show in the bottom picture? I guess this plugs in over the top of the existing plug?

    Thanks,
    Darren

Why don't you simply fit a socket like this, where the Sky box will be fitted and cable it back the master socket? It is very easy to fit additional sockets as shown here. It would be much better to have additional sockets where required rather than to have everything plugged into one socket in the hall.

So what you're saying is that you have several extensions, each with a piggyback-type plug like shown in the top left of this picture, all plugged into the back of one another?:

So do you have an NTE5 master socket like shown above in my other post?

Or do you have one like this:

Where do you take your broadband connection from? Your hall (master) socket or one of the extensions?

I'll come onto that later; whether it's any good for what you want depends on what type of master socket you have and where your broadband connects to your line.
