Is an e-reader an e-writer?

I've managed to get myself thoroughly confused by Sony e-readers and Amazon Kindles and all the rest of them. What I'm looking for really is a very portable electronic pad. I need to be able to write on the move into something that's lighter and/or smaller than a netbook, and something like the Kindle with that little keyboard on it would be about right. From what I've read of it though, it just seems to be a reader that you can add notes to, rather than something you can actually writer properly into.
Does one of these devices do what I'm after or am I stuck lugging the laptop about? It doesn't need to do anything fancy, just store things that have been written, perhaps be able to connect to a PC to transfer things and not be a proper pain to use, typing-wise.
I would like to stress, however, that I am not going to buy an iPad, so please discount that from any suggestions!
Thanks,
cid.

Try something like an Alphasmart - proper typing keyboard, runs for months on a set of batteries. Not smaller and lighter than a netbook (that would be useless for typing) but very robust. There were a batch on Ebay for peanuts each a few weeks ago (and as they didn't all sell, the seller might still have some left).A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

E-pen any use? Quite a few different types around. Don't know if they're any good.

My word, I never knew such a thing existed. Unfortunately I have the handwriting of a long-sighted GP so it's probably not much use to me.0
