Can you get out of a British gas contract. My contract has been renewed on 8/2/10 and prices have doubled!!

Is it a business or domestic contract? If a normal domestic contract then yes you can - but there may be a charge of between £30 and £70 per fuel on some tariffs. If a business contract then, no, you are tied for a new contract period. Termination fees for business contracts run to hundreds of pounds (and they are not obliged to let you out.)

Yes it is a business supply. I am a small business and their new rates are criminal!!! They have told me that there is no way that they will let me out of the contract. My rates hane gone from 10p per kw to 14p andd the standing charge from 15p to 45p per day. I didnt receive a letter explaining this but then they tell me that its irrelevant anyway!!!

Hi tracybutler - I'm afraid you have been snared into a business con that became such a scandal that Ofgem the regulator brought in new rules for contracts to supply Gas/Elec to small businesses

Unfortunately the new rules that came in on Jan. 20th, are not retrospective to contracts set up before this date which yours appears to be, so it seems that your only option is to carefully read thro' the contract and make a big note in your dairy as to exactly what the cancellation procedure is at the contract's end
