I think that it's within 11 hours of auction end a listing can no longer be edited, so price can't be changed. The seller could always cancel & relist with a higher start price even with bids on.

Does anyone else sometimes bid more than the "buy it now" price?

I won an item once that was listed at 99p with a buy it now of £10.

It was a low intrest item ending at a strange time, I thought it was worth £15 so I bid £15 in the hope that no one else bid and I would get it for 99p (which I did):j

Ebay didnt seem very happy and nagged me to just pay the BIN price if I wanted it. I suppose that would mean more dosh for them though.

There's many a time I've put a 'holding' bid on an item and then set up a snipe at my absolute maximum price with 3 seconds to go.
Like anything else, you win some you lose some, but it's very handy to use a snipe tool if the item ends at a silly time or if you can't be near the computer.

Which is higher, 10% of £10 or 10% of the £15 (if it gets that high)?

More likely they thought you didn't know how BiN works so gave you a pop-up to say "you can get this cheaper than that".
