can I use 2 routers to extend wirelesss?

Options
I haven't ever used a forum before so sorry if I get this wrong or am doing it in the wtong place.
I used to have tiscali broadband with a siemens gigaset se587 wlan dsl router and have changed to sky with a sagem router. As I can't get signal upstairs I am thinking that if I plug in the old router and do something (what?) maybe the sagem could send the signal to the siemens and then the siemens would send it to the upstairs computer.
Could anybody tell me if this is possible and if so how to do it? Or even where to go to find out.
Many thanks

You can get wireless extenders but I don't think there is much you can do using two ADSL routers to achieve what you want.

If one had been a cable router I think all that would be needed is to run an ethernet cable from one of the ports on the ADSL router to the cable router input port.

Maybe HomePlug/Powerline Networking would be the better solution?

I think even with wireless extenders you may struggle as (at least with the ones i've used) they require certain login details (username/password) to work. I noticed that you are on Sky broadband, their routers come pre-programmed with your ADSL username and password, they are not allowed (why I don't know) to give out these details, doing this makes it more difficult to use your own kit as they prefer you to use theirs. ;(

I tried to use WDS on some routers the other night with not the best results so have resorted to using home plugs in between the two to cover that part. I've got both routers however running with teh same SSID and WPA2 password so nothing new needs configuring for any of the wireless connections, they just pick whichever signal is strongest around the house. Not the cheapest option but I had all the parts so to me it was relatively cheap anyway

usually yes but its not a feature 'every' modem/router comes with as default, you need to look up if either one is able to operate as a repeater/extender and thats the one you'll need to put upstairs.

worth noting putting a repeater on the network cuts wireless transmission speeds in half (ie wirelessG will go from 54 MBps to 24MBps, still much faster than your internet upload/download speeds but might affect you if you move large files around your network internally)

you can do this i did this way
we'll call the router connected to the internet router1 and the other router 2

on router 2 go into the settings and disable DHCP and change its ip address to 192.168.1.100 then best to put it on another wireless channel
    reboot
then plug a network cable into one of the 4 network ports NOT the Wan port
plug the other end of the network cable into router 1's network port again NOT the wan port
turn it all on and should work fine
  • I have extended my wireless network with two routers by having them at differet side of my home. Both adsl router, the second i changed to brided mode. Also had to change the addressing table. i have a cable between the two routers connecting them as it wasn't possible to connect them together wirelessly. For this i'd need a wireless bridge.
