chains may rattle but they DON'T break. hence my next car will be a Nissan Micra. no belt cheap insurance and japanese reliabilty . what could go wrong when you can get a good one for about £400 ????
Chains can snap on Micras mate, I have known two or three let go now and the owners have plumped for replacement engines. Like you say though they give plenty of warning of trouble by rattling, but that shouldnt really be ignored. I remember Ford Sierra twin cams from a few years ago also had a repuation for the chains snapping without any warning at all.0
