EDF Estimated Bills.

Hi, looking for some help!

I moved house over a year ago now and have just received a bill from EDF for £240 for electricity. When i left i rang them up and they sent me a final bill which i payed. They are now saying that the time that i lived there they only sent me estimated bills and they have now done a reading and this is an actual one.

Where do i stand i cant really afford £240 at the moment. I was paying £85 a month on DD for my electric anyway for a 2 bed apartment. I spent most of my time working away so the electric would on ly be used at a weekend. Does this seem High.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Meter readings? Don't suppose you have any of those do you?
Only the meter redaings can determine how much you owe; actual ones, not estimated ones.

Without being able to question the validity of the meter readings, you'll have little luck disputing the bill.

As for only using electricity at weekends, are you saying you never heated the apartment at all when you were not there?
What about keeping food fresh? Did you not have a fridge and/or freezer?

If you can't afford to pay the £240 owed all in one go, speak with EDF and try and agree a repayment schedule.

If you check your old bills see if the end readings marked as 'estimated', if this is the case which EDF says it is them you should have checked the meter reading and called them up with the correct reading.

Was your final bill based on an estimated reading? Did you keep a copy of the reading when you left?

If they have proof you have used the elec then you have to pay.

  • Hi, cheers for reply.

I dont have the meter readings to hand but when i moved in i gave them a meter reading and when i moved out i gave them a meter reading. This is how they worked out my final bill. So the two important ones were actual readings.

You need to check that the reading you gave them was used on the original final bill or not. If it was check what reading they are using on the 'revised' final bill. If you still have the move in reading, check you 1st bill used that as the start reading.

That being the case, and presuming EDF actually used those for billing, how can they claim you owe them money based on previously estimated readings?
(The intermediate readings don't matter whether they were estimated or actual, the 2 actual readings you have are all that is required to produce an accurate bill for the total period)

Based on those readings, you can actually calculate for yourself how much you used. Then take off the money you have already paid and if the balance is not zero, then a settlement is due. (Remember to allow for any price changes and/or discounts you were entitled to)

The only thing I can think is that they are suggesting a reading you gave is not accurate e.g. the final reading you gave didn't match the start reading the next occupant gave. In that situation, you need them to explain what evidence they have to suggest that your reading was incorrect.

Hi alfaguide - You say reported your meter readings to EDF when you moved into this address and again when you moved out, so it would seem that any bill on estimated readings would only have issued been between these two dates, and if there were any, these would have been adjusted to reality by your final reading for which they issued a bill

Then there is also the conundram of the date on which they are supposed to have read the meter to get a reading for this "New" final bill - Could it be that the new tenant has failed to report thier arrival in this house to EDF?

Having moved it's unlikely you kept the bills for an old address, so write to EDF requesting copies of all the bills sent to you during your tenancy - They have to supply them - and check the dates and readings histoty
    All the best
