When is a guarantee not a guarantee!!

I’m unsure if this is the right forum in which to ask this question but I cannot find any other suitable link on the web site.
In December 2008 I purchased a generator Iron from Cordless Phone Ltd, a site I found through e-bay. The Iron has subsequently stopped working, to be more precise, the generator has stopped producing steam. I contacted Cordless Phone Ltd and informed them of the problems and asked them if the Iron was covered by the 2 year manufacturer warranty.
I was informed that it was not covered and that the Iron was subject to their own guarantee which is only a year, a fact I did not know at the time of purchase. The Iron arrived in a Morphy Richards box with a two year guarantee advertisement on the outside of the box. Incidentally this model still has the same guarantee as I recently saw the same iron in a warehouse outlet in Grimsby.
I have contacted Morphy Richards direct and they have telephoned me informing me that the problem is not theirs as I did not purchase the Iron from Curry’s or Dixons or from them directly.
I am absolutely furious with Morphy Richards and Cordless Phone ltd as I feel that I have been ‘taken for a ride’ or miss sold because I did not purchase it direct from Morphy Richards. On the telephone the customer service woman informed me that if I chose to buy an item from a ‘e-bay’ site then as they are sold in bulk and at a discounted cost then that is the reason they, Morphy Richards do not cover the guarantee.
I welcome your advice on this as I feel this must be brought to the attention of members of the public if indeed it is true.

Theres not really anything wrong with this, its a fairly common practise. It's only sold not as described if they sold it on the website as a 2 year guarantee which i get the feeling they didnt.
As such you need to go down the Sale of goods route stating the goods are not of satisfactory quality and ask for a refund/replacement/refund(may be partial). For the purposes of simplicity, this will be their choice which to provide.
They may ask for prof that it is an inherent fault which they can do and you must pay for an independent report confirming its an inherent fault and not down to misuse or wear and tear. If the report is favourable then you should get your remedy and a refund of the report, if not its off to small claims.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Thank you for your response and advice. You are correct they did not advertise it with a 2 year guarantee (or at least from what I can remember) they no longer sell Irons.0
