Are you classied as an independent? direct.gov
    • you are aged 25 or over
    • you have care of a child
    • you have no living parents
Generally speaking, you’ll also be classed as independent if either of the following applies to you before the first day of the academic year for which you’re applying for support:
    • you are, or have been, married or in a civil partnership
    • you are classed as having supported yourself for at least three years
If not then you will still be assessed on your parents income.

Unfortunately, student fiannce will still calculate your entitlement based on your parents income unless you and your partner get married or you can prove that you've supported yourself for the last 3 years :(

I moved in with my partner in Aug 2008 and my entitlement is calculated on my mum and step-dad's combined earnings even though I no longer have any contact with either of them. Apparantly, this isn't grounds for estrangement as I don't have evidence from somebody "official" such as a social worker and it's not long enough to be considered independent! :(

I tried claiming that I supported myself for the last 3 years and submitted evidence of working for the last 4 years in the form of P60s and pay slips, but they didn't accept this either as I was still living at home whilst working so wasn't supporting myself - if you follow that... lol.

It is very harsh in my opinion as it means i'm not entitled to any grants (only tuition fee loans and maintenance loans) because my step-dad has a high paid job. Whereas, my partner and I have a combined income of about £16k at the moment and it barely covers our expenses at the moment :(

    :(

Where you were living shouldn't affect getting independent status as long as you were working substantial hours and were out of education.

Edit:I can't quite see how you can have been supporting yourself and out of education for 4 years if you're now only 20 and at university.
