The manager has some history running a similar fund I think, from H&L.

He then took a break from fund management before joining Artemis five years ago to manage a very different institutional fund not available to private investors. Whilst volatile at times, it delivered outstanding performance during a period when the stock market fell. The key to its success was its flexibility. We were therefore delighted when he launched a fund managed along the same lines for private investors last summer – the Artemis Strategic Assets Fund.

I must say I like the idea of having a manager who can take evasive action on my behalf rather than being forced to go long even though they strongly suspect the market is ready to nosedive, i.e. defensive meaning stocks that don't quite fall as much :eek:

The manager stayed long on oil after that stopped being profitable. He seems to have believed incorrectly that the summer drop in 2008 was transient. The monthly phone Q&A sessions for this fund can be useful if you wonder what is happening with it.
