Points for Re-using Carrier Bags at Tesco

Just been to Tesco's and yet again I forgot to take carrier bags with me to get points.

But outside is a big bin for recycling carriers bags - so just grabbed a couple and off I went to get my shopping.

Unfortunately got told points are not being given until next week, didn't want to argue with the chap as he let me use a lot of coupons. Cant have everything.

But if anyone does forget to take carrier bags with them - just use the ones outside in the recycling bin thats just for recycling carrier bags.

I spoke to the customer service helpline regarding this new policy and I was told that points would only be given for 'recycled bags / reused bags' and would not be given for eco-friendly cotton bags!! So... be sure to bring with you the old used plastic bags, and, I guess, leave the eco-friendly bags at home? Seems like a shame.

That's not true, they shouldn't have told you that. You get points for reusing any bags, cotton bags, plastic bags, shopping trolleys, boxes etc... Tesco are trying to cut down the use of new carrier bags so they should be eager to give you points for not using their bags. BTW you don't get a a point for refusing a bag!!! as some people have tried!!
  • I got 6 points fine today.

not only are tescos trying to cut the cost of their carrier bag bill..... but i think its more like over half the carrier bags in landfils are tescos...so i think its more likely that they are trying to stop this so they dont get it in the neck from enviroment agencies....groups.....etc...and this way it looks as though they are going green......what posibbly could happen now.. is if your in another supermarket.. you will pick up more carriers than you really need... just to use them in tescos.... ..so more of other supermarkets carriers in the landfil instead of tescos....bags......

i am making some shopping bags out of cheap calico...which is very strong and makes ideal bags.........

  • Although, as always with Tesco, this is primarily aimed at increasing their profits, I have to say this actually sounds like a sensible idea. I hope other shops follow suit.
  • How will it work on the self-scan?

I used the self-scan yesterday, and at the moment there doesn't seem to be a button to add green points. I went to customer services afterwards, and they said that they don't ordinarily give them out if you use the self-scan, but seeing as he was nice, he'd add them for me!! I got 3 points for a big M&S freezer bag. I think that it's a cheek that they don't do them on self-scan, after all, we're saving them hiring more staff too!

It seems to depend on the discretion of the SA.

    @ UltraCheap,

Thats total BS about the cotton bags!! IT says on their tv advert "it doesn't matter what else you use" then shows Alan Titchmarsh using a wheelbarrow and someone else using a suitcase!

They don't know their !!!!!! from their elbow these people!!
