. Must say that I couldn't smell anything fume-wise, and we did explain the reason to both sets of neighbours, just in case the noise was bothering them.

Properly a two stroke horrible dirty things. while you partner had a four stroke. Is it a dirt bike as opposed to normally road biker perchance.

Oh, I was under the impression when the Highway Code says you MUST NOT do something that it is based upon law, usually the Road Traffic Act?

You are correct this is from the introduction page
Many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison. Such rules are identified by the use of the words ‘MUST/MUST NOT’.

Get on it and ride it around the corner.
  • "It is supposedly illegal to leave your engine running with the vehicle unattended on the public highway (so this would include pavement and roads) but I've never heard of anyone being charged for it"

Well you have now! I got points and a fine for leaving a lorry engine running, outside a shop, while I bought a packet of fags back in the 70's.

Construction and Use Regulations 1986 Reg 107

Regulation 107(2)(a). This states that no person shall cause or permit to be on any road any motor vehicle which is not attended by a person duly licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and the parking brake is effectively set. Exemptions to the requirements of this Regulation as to the stopping of the engine include a fire brigade vehicle, the engine of which is being used for any fire brigade purpose.

It's only a matter of time until someone notices there is a pattern where the bike is frequently left running for long periods with no one nearby. Then it will disappear, either because someone noticed and took note of the pattern, then planned the best time to steal it, or an opportunistic thief will take it as soon as they notice it with no one in sight.

If it's on his driveway, he can keep it running all day long!
