Pond plants

Options
Having recently relined and refilled my winter damaged pond, I'd like to pop a few flowering plants in it. It's about 80-90cm deep and a bit stepped around the side. Anyone recommend anything nice? It just has grasses in at the moment. Am interested in ranunculus as it looks really pretty, maybe something that floats on top with no need for pots would be nice. Will wait til I get some replies then have a look on eBay :)

You dont mention the size of your pond -very very important as one plant can 'swamp'(sic!) a small pond!

Hi heynonnynonny. We have a new pond so don't have much experience but I can tell you what we have put in that is doing well. Our pond is about 2m x 3m so roughly the same area as yours.

We have a water lily and a flowering rush, neither flowering yet but both growing well - these are the only deep water ones so far. For marginals we have water forget-me-not, water marigold, ladies mantle, water mint, purple and yellow irises and a curly reed.

We have also put in loads of oxygenators - willow moss, water crowfoot and elodea crispa which seem to be doing ok.

I've also just received a load I bought from ebay which I'm really pleased with as they arrived in perfect condition - water hawthorn, fringed water lily, frogbit and bogbean - if you'd like to know which sellers I used PM me and I'll send you some links, not sure if you are supposed to advertise particular sellers on here (though if I'm wrong let me know and I'll happily do so).

    Hope this helps.

Hi. thanks for replying, there is already 4-5 pots of grasses in there, a big black rhizome which I think is a lily, and I have ordered some ranuncula hedera summat which floats on top with no pot, I think that is crowfoot? And on the way home nipped into the aquatic centre and bought a 'nympaea' which looks to be a type of lily.

It is a built raised pond underneath a pergola so can't really have marginals as it is surrounded by decking, all the plants I get will have to like deepish water. I will google those ones you have mentioned, just want to be careful as not to get something that will spread and cover the whole pond.

    hi
Well if your looking to restock i really would recommend a trip to The Waterside Nursery -
    - as i see your Staff based and they are not to far from you at Hinckley in Leics - the owner Linda has aquatic plant knowledge 2nd to none - you will get plants there that you will not see anywhere else as well as first hand info.

Otherwise there are standard stuff like-

    Stratiotes loides - Water Soldier
    Eichornia crassipes - Water hyacinth

All floaters or deep marginals like-
    Aponogeton distachyum - Water Hawthorn
Greyer by the minute - Older by the hour - Wiser by the day

I have had a look at the website and got many many ideas, was looking at the pond starter packs. I'm on the northernmost part of Staffs so it's a good way away I think. Looks lke they have a really good selection of stuff.
