Is my laptop overheating?

I have stress tested my laptop with prime64. This is when my laptop is sitting on a desk, if its on my lap it would simply shut down.
If I were to reboot the computer while the stress test was running it will blue screen and only load to the login screen when its had about 10 mins to cool down.
Do you think this is a hardware problem?

Thanks

have you checked to see whether it has built up any fluff/ dust around the fan.
\also lap tops are not really supposed to be used resting on your lap... the fan vents need to be clear.
Your laptop is running hot0 -
Why are they call laptops if there not meant for the lap? haha ^^. The temps were taken on my desk I only got this laptop in January but i will check the vents.0

Cant see a spec of dust from the outside. I don't want to open it up and void the warranty or something. Even just doing general surfing on a hard wood desk with nothing blocking any fans its running at about 80-85 C I will contact Dell.0

Sounds like its just a badly designed computer
Dell made a quad core cheap for people to buy, without really making it usable.
People tend to buy specs, not look at actual functionality (Which Dell well know):idea:0 -
Youd expect it to not to just overheat though.
And the current crop of lynnfield laptop I7s are actual laptop processors, so they should have reasonable thermal regulation.
The frequency looks way to high, alough frankly I dont trust coretemp to give me an actual reading. might want to check if somthings auto overclocking your system. or at a last resort turn off turbo mode.0 -
Great my laptop just turned off while it was on the desk, wasn't even doing anything intensive. Just coursework only lost the last 5 mins thankfully.0

Save all your work and get it sorted under warranty:idea:0 -
Is it overclocked?
Only had a quick look but the i7 Lynnfields I can find go up to 2.933GHz.
edit. 3.46GHz with Turbo boost.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Nah its the laptop version which is 4 * 1.6 cores. I haven't overclocked it all. I have sent dell a email and will phone them tomorrow. I had a issue when i first got the laptop of the graphics card was locking up and they told me to format the computer. Then a new graphics card update came out which was to fix the issue.0
