Would I get penalised?

This is my situation: I'm a single mum with 2 children (2 & 3 yrs) and currently work 18hrs a wk on Fri, Sat and Sun. Now my childminder dropped the bombshell that she's unable to look after the kids anymore due to personal reasons. Now I've got the difficult task of finding somebody to look after them on the weekend. In the worst case scenario that I can't find another childminder or my work refuse to change my working days to weekdays would I be able to claim income support straight away or will I get a penalty because I quit my job. This is the last resort and my boss has been previously really good at changing hrs when I split with ex. But I need to be prepared if the worst comes to worse.

As you have 2 children under 7 you should get income support straight away, remember to inform WTC of your change in circs and if you rent and get LHA tell them your no longer working as you should get help with the rent x

Thanks thats a relief. My claim for LhA is still on going as I'm on the mortgage with the ex but he refuses to sell as its in negative equity. Provided all the paperwork and am waiting for the decision.Another reason I do not want to give up work as I wouldnt be able to afford to live.

  • Is your ex the children's dad? Can he not help out with childcare? Or any other family members?

Yes he is and has them every other weekend. No family here, they all live in Germany. I would love to return there but ex would throw every stone in the way to prevent this. Plus I don't want to prevent kids seeing their dad either, oh catch 22.
