Stop Work for Full-Time Study > Eligible for Tax Credit ?

Hello.

I have been working for past 4 years and will go back to full-time studies doing my Masters. I was told by a friend of mine that i might get some TAX CREDIT which could be around £60 a week or so.

Does anyone know whether this is true ? Or maybe advise me what i might be eligible to get ...

Appreciate any help i can get.

Thank you.

What sort of tax credit? there's a few... I think you'd be exempt from council tax, maybe that's what they mean, but you just wouldn't have to pay it rather than actually receiving anything if you are in full time education.
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.

If you have a child you could get child taxcredit but if you have not got children you have to be over 25years old to claim taxcredit but i think you could have to be working. I'd check direct.gov.uk could have info about what you can claim or citizens advice are helpfull. Hope everything goes well
  • If youre not working 16+ hours, or have no eligible children then the answer is a definite no.

Not if youre disabled or have returned to work after a period of 6 months + on a qualifying benefit and are 50+ yrs of age.

*Source - Im a tax credit officer.

Then you might want to get your facts correct first time round! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

They were right first time around......(!) I stated the minimum criteria dependant upon circumstances.

But hey, its Sunday - not a day for arguing! :D

Its still got to be 16+ hours that you work (or an average of 16 hours over the year if your hours are irregular. The qualifying benefits are income support, job seekers, or employment support allowance. And of course you have to be over 50 years old. Its called the 50+ element (surprisingly!), and you ARE entitled to WTC if you meet the criteria, however, this only last for 6 months, after which your entitlement will end if youre not working over 30 hrs or are disabled.
