gearbox gone after less than 3 months!
Hi all, i am a newbie so please bear with me. Well, bought a 11 year old
grand cherokee less than 3 months ago(i live in Isle of Man by the way), from begining have had problems. Airbag light stays on, horn wouldn't work, (even now only works when steering wheel is in certain position!),
stalling(it's an automatic) when slowing down or racing away when brake is on!(scary!). They did a service and some other work on it and reckoned it was fixed. Now, after having bought it only 11 weeks ago the gearbox has gone! They are now saying as it was a 'trade sale'( it was advertised in local paper and online but never said it was a trade sale) they won't pay for it to be fixed. What can i do? Can i make them pay for repair or don't i have a leg to stand on and should pay up.:(

Depends how much time & effort you want to put into it.
Sometimes its better to bite your lip and dig deep into those pockets, get the box fixed by a specialist or a 2nd hand box, Or sell it on as if with known faults & buy something else.
If you have the time write to them stating the facts & send a copy to your local trading standards, See what replies you get before deciding what to do.
Engine revs change when braking could be an air leak on the servo.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
"trade sales" to the public don't exist - a motor trader cannot sell cars to the general public "sold as seen".
I doubt you've got much comeback though 3 months in. 3 days in maybe.0 -
^^I guess a gearbox could have a life in miles, not months.0

Bad luck there OP, i hope you get it fixed somehow.
I think we've all made huge errors at some point in our car ownership and an older Jeep is usually going to be one of those.
My mate's 2005 GC is just as bad, the engine is a dream it's the rest of the car that's not up to it.
Learn from this mistake and do lots of research before taking the plunge on such a vehicle.0 -

I used to visit regularly in the 90's and, for example, there was no breath test. Though I never took advantage!
Do you have Citizens Advice or Trading Standards in the IOM? If so, I suggest they may be able to advise. Like others I doubt you have any comeback but I doubt any one on here will know for sure.0 -
"Gearbox gone" could be expensive, or simple. What exactly are the symptoms?0
