Virus on Laptop or Hardware problem

Options
Hi I could really do with some help.

I have a new laptop and there is something wrong with the screen. A big chunk of the screen is missing ie, it has a grey area with lines going across. You can see windows 7 in the background and you can click onto documents but this grey area with lines won't disappear. I have done a system restore and worked in safemode but there is no difference. The last anti malware check was on Thursday and it did detect 2 threats which were deleted. I did another full scan to make sure there was nothing there.

Before this the laptop has been working fine. Just wondering if it is a hardware problem or do I have a virus?????:( and what can I do?

sounds like a goosed screen (hardware problem)

When you boot the laptop up, is the screen the same during the boot process (before Windows loads)?

Tap DEL or F2 to get into BIOS, is the screen the same there.

If it is the same, it confirms it is the screen itself.

Small chance it may be the connector but unlikely, new screen required by the sounds of it.

The screens are not normally covered under warranty. Costs around £70-80 for a new one and about an hours work to change it.

Hi when I boot the laptop the screen is fine - it will load windows 7 and then starts flickering. Pressed F2 in BIOS and screen is fine.

I've only had it 35 days and I can't return it due to 30 days return policy with Amazon. I presume it will be a connection problem or something - fingers cross I hope.

Paid £400 for it and not very happy at the moment considering it was my 40th bday present.

I don't know of anything software driven (virus etc) which could cause a chunk of screen to flicker as you describe. It doesn't even sound like a driver issue as Safe Mode was the same.

Leave in in the BIOS screens for 5 minutes, flip the lid back and forth.

If it remains okay and it definitely only affects windows, try hitting PRT SCRN and pasting it into MS PAINT

    Save the image as screen.jpg

Upload the image to www.tinypic.com and post the image.

Backup your data, restore to factory settings, and if it is still apparent, use your warranty (assuming you haven't physically damaged it accidentally).
