A little story and advice for those who insist on splashing the cash when their PC seems a bit slow and run down

For the past week or so, my monitor has been randomly losing display input whilst working on it for no apparent reason..

Finally getting sick I shutdown the PC and decided to whip out my trusty old tools (aka screwdriver, compressed air) and set about the PC

With enough dust blown out of all the heatsinks and fans to rival that of a ancient mummy I found a new horror. To my amazement the cooling fan had seized on my card, hence the abnormally slow response and high CPU temps...

With my good old faithful expert equipment (aka WD-40) :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Sprayed the gunk on all fans, and let it dry up. Reconnected and good as new, PC now a lot healthier

So for those whose PC are acting funny or suffering performance issues, take it apart and clean it up. Or go to a local computer store / computer geek friend and pay them a couple of notes to give it an overhaul with compressed air and WD40 on the fans to stop the bearings siezing :)

Cleaning out your computer regularly is an excellent way to keep it in working order. A computer full of dust can't cool itself efficiently, and heat is the enemy of computers. There are many now broken machines that would still be in working order if their owners had cleaned them out once in awhile.

    However, I wouldn't recommend using WD40:

I wish I could get into mine, it's an Acer and the case has rivets in it. :(

Yeah, I know it's bad, just wanted a quick fix though and I made sure it had evaporated first. I've got some machine oil somewhere just gotta find it lol

I'm checking with speed fan now, GPU card was around 79-90c without fan working. It's now hovering around 50c so I'm much happier :)

I know, it's mad isn't it? I wanted to piggyback my old H/D onto this computer but couldn't get into it.

What's the moel number for your Acer? I've never yet seen a computer that can't be opened for user servicing or upgrading.
