When you get summoned to attend a medical assessment, is it usually local, or do you have to travel to a big town/city which could be miles away from where you live?

There are centres throughout the Country but they are usually in Cities or large Towns so it maybe that you have to travel some distance.

That is awful, why can't they at least have the decency to see you locally, especially as undoubtedly it will result in rejection. Also it will cost quite a bit to travel.

Is it the usually the place where you have to return the form to?

You can claim travel costs if you want.

No it is not always the place that you return the form to.

Thanks, that was going to be my next question - i.e. do they pay travel costs? We would have to go by train and so it would be quite expensive.

They normally give you instructions on how to get to the medical (software generated ones), so you should be able to claim for whatever means they recommend.

If you want taxi, or perhaps a means of travel not on the recommendations its best to check with them before hand to ensure they are ok with that and will re-imburse.

Usually, the assessments are held at one of the medical centres (they have around 130 ish (of top of head)).

Parking may be a problem for those that go by car, also in some cases, wheelchair access is difficult if not impossible according to some peoples reports of some assessments.

Home assessments are possible, but only if strong supporting evidence is available that a home assessment is the only medical option (ie travel is out of the question for medical reasons).

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that
