Replacing a shower with the same model

Further to my posts about the dripping shower, turns out it is completely finished according to the plumber, it's a bit old and parts would cost more than a new shower. I have got hold of a direct replacement in order to make the fitting easier/cheaper.

Would you advise that I pay to get it fitted properly or should I let the boyf have a go (he has some electrical training but not qualified)?

I am inclined to get a professional in but thought I would check I wasn't throwing money away.

It is an integral power shower and all the plumbing is in place from the old one...

  • If this isn't done properly you will literally be putting you life at risk. Is the current installation safe? Is it up to the latest standard? Does it have an RCD and has it been recently tested to ensure it is working properly (and I don't mean just pushing the test button!).

Most manufacturers recommend the use of an RCD although this is not a requirement of the 16th Edition of the Wiring Regulations.

    Your life, your choice.

My choice, have it done by a professional.

Its my understainding (and I'm probably wrong) that this is covered under Part P (special locations). That would mean that if you make the alterations yourself, and something goes wrong your liable. I've moved sockets and added outlets etc, this isnt a big job, but I'd get it done by a professional.

Like for like replacement of a shower is not notifiable under Part P. However, I do feel strongly that this is wrong because of the safety issues.

    You're right wabbit02, it isn't a big job if it's a straight forward replacement.

Just because there is a shower there at the moment doesn't mean that it has been installed to the latest safety standards.

Hmm maybe I am justified in getting a pro to come in then!

Boyf will just have to be offended I think...!

Anything in zones 1 and 2, I would get a pro to do.
