We have a Siemens with 3 pyro cycles. Our door cracked similarly to yours but the crack could not be 'felt' from the outside, it cracked from the inside of the glazing, if that makes sense.

Siemens replaced it foc. The engineer told us that it happens (very rarely) due to the high temperatures being reached very quickly followed by intense cooling.

I must admit we do not clean it at all before sticking it on the hottest pyro cycle. It incinerates everything to fine white ash which we wipe away when cool, even then it is only about a teaspoon full of ash.

I would stick to your guns and if necessary email everyone at Neff until you get the reply you want. Your oven door should not crack on this cycle.

My new ovens are Siemens. I'm relieved to hear that they did the right thing and replaced the glass FOC.

misskool - They definitely are just trying to fob you off. I'm glad to hear you'll keep pushing them. Best of luck, and please remember to let us know how you get on.

Well if all you can think of is money then that's fine.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Thanks all, engineer came and replaced the glass panel under warranty but gave a new sheet with it saying that the glass panel has to be cleaned before starting the cycle. Apparently grease/food particles that get carbonised in the glass will break it during the pyrolytic cycle.

He seems to think that's a common fault with the Neff ovens. It's because the glass panel is for the whole oven door and not a small one like some of the others

But that'll teach me to research the ovens I buy now

I'm really glad you got a result, misskool. Well done for not backing down.

I'm worried now as one of our Siemens ovens (Neff, Bosch and Siemens are all part of the same group) has a full door glass panel, too. Looking at the instructions, it does say to clean the oven door before setting the pyrolitic function going. However, I thought that meant the outside of the door! Sounds as though I was wrong. It certainly doesn't say that not cleaning your oven door will result in the glass cracking - all it says is to wipe inside the oven with a damp cloth to get rid of any loose dirt.

I never had this problem with my French pyrolitic oven!

I agree with andrew-b, it might well be worth writing to them to let them know how daft and annoying this is. I might do the same myself.
  • I set the Pyrolytic Automatic Self-Cleaning function this morning and after letting it run it's course and cool, I opened the door to "simply wipe away the dust" only to find the inner glass has cracked.

The oven was purchased in June 2006 so is out of warranty and as such Siemens are expecting me to pay all costs of replacement, but surely the glass should not just break using one of the functions of the oven? Especially as I had removed food residue and wiped down all surfaces with a damp cloth as advised in the manual?

I'm so religious now about following the manual to the letter as I've already paid for the inner glass and seal to be replaced in September 2008 after my flatmate used oven cleaner on the door and seal which is a no no and caused marks to the glass and the seal to perish.

She was only trying to be helpful, bless her and I didn't mind taking this cost on the chin as it was something we'd stuffed up, but to clean it as instructed and for glass which is less than two years old to crack just seems cheeky.

The engineer won't be out until Tuesday so we'll have no oven until then. After he's gone, what assurances will I have that this just won't happen again? The Siemens adviser wasn't able to offer me any.

Are these automatic cleaning functions even safe?!

Slighty peeved to say the least.
  • This morning the inner door on my smeg oven exploded whilst on a pyro-clean cycle. The oven is fairly new and only the second time its been cleaned. Fortunately there was no one in the kitchen at the time as glass shot out the oven surrounds (with a loud bang), not only covering the floor but also on the work top across the other side of the kitchen! The smeg service department said that it was not common but does occur ... makes one a bit apprehensive now of using the pyro-cleaning. It may be a week before they can replace it.
