Had a job offer with salary lower than advertised

22k would be the salary for someone who met all the criteria. As you have stated in your opening post - you don't meet all the criteria. Ergo - they have offered you a lesser amount until you prove that you have met the criteria, if indeed you do decide to work at it.0

its 37.5 hour week so works out at 16,600 (ish)0 -

Thank you for you e-mail.
I can confirm that the starting salary would be £16,575 for this position and then reviewed after 6 months.
I’m not sure where the 22k figure came from as we always put salary negotiable on our adverts and then discuss it with the applicant if they are successful after the interview stage.
If things worked out based on actual positive results I would certainly review the package but can not guarantee that it would be in the area of the salary you are seeking.
I know you are looking for a long term career and understand your position however I feel the salary on offer for this position is the best I can do at this time.
Please let me know if you still want to be considered for this position.

so i replied......
The salary information of 22k was on the letter received in the post with the information about the role.
Your right it was advertised online as negotiable as i have just looked at my application.
If the salary is negotiable as stated would you be willing to increase slightly by £1 per hour?
I am available to start from next week or whenever would suit your needs.
I look forward to your response
Kind regards

" I feel the salary on offer for this position is the best I can do at this time. "
I would question the logic in this. He is either able to offer £22k for the position, or he is not. This statement does not say it is you that limits the salary, but the position. If he had said "that's the best I can offer based on your skills and experiece", then ok, but he says it's the best for the position.
Having said that, I'd go with the previous advice, if you need the job, go for it. However, if you are currently on £19k, don't bother.
Best of luck!0 -
By the OP's own admission he doesnt meet the full person requirement therefore to expect the maximum is delusional.
Where you dont meet the minimum even the minimum salary is a bit lucky
The whole talk of false advertising is ridicolous or will you also suggest the OP is done for fraud for applying.
As for Ms Anderson. Again what exactly are you on about? the manager is simply saying that the 16kish is the best he can offer the OP based on his experience etc not the best he could offer. If he did offer the maximum now what happens in 6 months when the OP wants more after probation or for those already being paid less who may claim abundance of discrimination etc
OP needs to make a decision. Either he wants the job and will take the risk and salary or he wont.0 -
Dear xxxx
I wish to explore a new applicant as they are from the industry and have the product experience as well as sales experience so at this point I will have to remove the offer from the table.
Obviously this is not an ideal situation but I will be touch as soon as possible to let you know if the vacancy is still open.
Regards
so i replied saying it was unfair of him to take away the offer of employment just because i questioned the salary being advertised at 22k..
He replied
I understand you are obviously not happy about the situation but as
you didn't accept my initial offer I thought due to your previous e-
mails re 19k and the 22k that the offer of 16.5k was not of interest.
I do note your sales experience but can not overlook product knowledge
which could quickly benifit the business in these tough economic times.
I still think there could be a position for you and as I was looking
to create this position I am still working on the sales strategy.
I know it's difficult but please bear with me as I'm working to a
budget and need to work the figures.

But (according to him) he didn't take away the offer because you questioned the salary - he wants to "explore a new candidate".
My guess is that from his perspective, he offered you £16,575, you didn't accept (because you quite reasonably wanted to negotiate a higher salary), and so he's (quite reasonably) trying to find somebody who will accept £16,575. He doesn't want to pay you £22k (or £19k) because he feels that you don't have sufficient relevant experience.
I don't think that that's unfair. Even it if is unfair, there's nothing you can do about it unless you can show illegal discrimination on the grounds of race, sex etc. However, there's nothing remotely discriminatory about "you don't have the experience for the £22k job, so we'll offer you a trainee position on less money"!0 -
