Help with tax credits? - now seperated from husband

Hello there

I wondered if anyone could help?

I have recently seperated from my husband, he has moved out of our home We have a joint mortgage/bills and we also have a 4 year old little boy. I pay for him to go to nursery while i work so i do get some child tax credits

Do i need to inform the tax credits office that we have seperated? or are we still classed as partners? He will be giving me money towards the mortgage until we can sort something out, but he will have to pay some rent so i am going to struggle with bills/nursery etc.

Close down the joint claim and you will need to claim as a single person. Might mean you get a little extra too!

Don't suppose anyone knows how long a new claim usually takes? as i assume i won't get any tax credits while the single person claim is being sorted??

I didn't have a break in my tax credits when I changed from a joint claim to a single claim I think it might depend how busy or how much of a back log they have.
