domestic & general

i insured my dishwasher with them 9 year's ago. i've never made a claim for my dishwasher as i hav'nt had many problems. only when it was'nt washing like it should i always managed to sort that problem out myself.

only now the door is leaking so i had to call them, but in response i was told it can't be repaired as it's too old dont make the parts anymore.
nothing was mentioned to me about a replacement.
ive tried looking at their terms and conditions online but cant find anything to say about appliances of my age.
but surely if they were happy to keep taken money out of my bank then i should be covered regardless.
does anybody know anything about this. i want to get in contact again with them to demand it gets fixed but i want to know my rights before hand.

or because of its age, just let it drop. and buy a new 1 ?

I have a DomGen policy for a dishwasher (thanks to the previous owner taking out a 5 year warranty).

The summary of my plan states that if they decide not to repair the appliance, they may replace it with one of the same or similar make and specification. If they cannot arrange a replacement, they will pay a contribution toward the cost of a new appliance.

Check the wording of your policy.

At the end of the day (if your policy has similar wording), you have paid someone to ensure you have a working dishwasher. If they are unable to repair it then I would be pushing for a replacement. Worst case, they will cut back on any contribution toward a new dishwasher .... but as they say, if you don't ask... you don't get. What have you go to lose by pushing for a replacement?
  • They will replace it but you will be expected to make a contribution. I suspect it will be 70% but may be even more.

Given you will have to use their suppliers you may find one cheaper than your 70% elsewhere.

We had a similar thing with our washing machine recently.

It it can't be repaired they will offer cash towards replacement, on a sliding scale depending on the age of the appliance.

For a 9 year old item I would expect this to be around 10% of the value of a replacement - about £20-£30.
