Can a housewife get a Credit Card ?

Is it possible for a housewife (Occupation) to get a credit card or must you be in employment ?. Also would it be easier and better for my wife to apply direct to Natwest as she has a account with them with a overdraft (Never used).

Thanks.

I am a housewife and have several cards in my name, I do pay of the balance each month. In fact I have a higher limit o my cards than my husband have. The cards normally ask for household income.

Yes a housewife can get a credit card.

I am a stay at home mum (with no partner) and I have no trouble getting credit now since my credit report cleared of any nasties in 2008.

My latest card is the Nationwide one which I took out for the 13 months 0% on balance transfers :)

natwest's form asks for your income before tax and their minimum income is 10k pa so that may not be a suitable card but I know amex take household income. not sure about other companies.

Yes, I got an M&S More card 2 years ago as they asked for joint income of myself and my OH, I also applied for the Asda Credit Card a few months ago as they asked for joint income too so got 0% for 12 months with a £4k limit.

Yep, the wife's got a barclaycard with a limit in the thousands, I've had a vanquis for 3 months with a limit in the hundreds. her income is nil, I'm a higher rate taxpayer. Go figure.

but then she got hers when credit was easier to come, I haven't had anything on my file (good or bad) for about ten years due to the old 'why get credit if you don't need it' mindset...

My mum had a credit card with Cap One (long since closed) with a 10K limit a few years back - she hasnt worked in over 10 years after being medically retired with a serious spinal complaint - she always put her occupation as housewife and has never had any problems getting credit.

If she is a housewife why let her get a credit card. It will only encourage her to go shopping when she should be ironing, cleaning and cooking. :D

ho ho, it's a reward for having to slave after you lazy men :)

I am a housewife who was always turned down for cards but now have a halifax one card. If you dont have bad credit, then Halifax take into account total household income

Card companies don't discriminate against housewives/househusbands/wives/girlfriends/boyfriends etc. All that matters is that you/your partner (if linked) are credit worthy and that you have some form of income which can be in the form of a salary or pension or interest or government benefits etc and that income is a satisfactory amount for the card company.
