Cost of removals to/from Scottish Islands

Does anyone have any recent experience of paying a removals company to move to or from a Scottish Island?

The company we're getting a quote from is taking a long time to come up with a figure, but from mumblings I'm getting a bit concerned that the figure they come up with will be absolutely huge! OK, so two ferry journeys are involved, so I'm not expecting it to be cheap, but I know people have moved to Australia for about the same figure that I think they're coming up with.

I've started contacting other companies for quotes (yes, I know I should have done this before) but I wondered if anyone could offer any figures I could compare with?

good god. is that a record?
  • Hi

Can't comment on the cost of removals but when I used to work on community development projects on the west coast, the construction costs for any buildings had to have an 'island uplift' of around 35% on top of normal building costs...

What island are you heading to? I guess the removal costs will get you used to the high cost of living right from the start!

We're going to Sanday, one of the Orkney isles.

We've had a man from Pickfords here today. He will have a quote with us in a day or two, but his rough estimate is £1500 to £2000. If the quote comes out anywhere near that we will be very happy. We have been very pleased with with Pickfords so far, they have been very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
