XP Re-install

I did not want to hijack the thread about XP install but can someone help me about a re-install.

I have found this:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

about how to re-install but it goes back to 2001. I have read people have problems reinstalling SP1 & SP2 and with updating the drivers. Is there an easier way to do it?

The only easier way to do it would be to buy a new copy of XP that has SP2 built in.
Aside from that it looks a reasonable guide.

That guide is very good and still valid today.

Yes, but my copy of XP was bought before SP2 which was a massive upgrade. How long will it take me to download all the windows updates since 2002 and be sure my computer is protected at the same time.

'Immediately run Windows Update to bring sure your system is up-to-date. There are already many updates available for Windows XP on Windows Update, so you should visit this site right away (it's found in Help & Support, or you can click the icon in Start -> All Programs). You may need to reboot after certain updates, and some updates will require you to install them individually. Keep installing and rebooting until you've got them all. Windows Update includes hardware driver updates, critical system updates, security fixes, application compatibility updates, and other important updates'

If you are using a router with a built in firewall you should be ok whilst downloading the updates if you only visit windows updates.
Or you could get someone to post you a cd of sp2...

Or you could just slipstream SP2 into your own copy of Windows XP and burn it and you will have a fully updates SP2 Windows XP cd and only need to download the updates from SP2 onward.

Instead of immediatly updating,(turn the router off) Why not install a firewall and anti virus then go online and download updates?

That way you will be safe from nasties.

Burning a slipstreamed cd would be better as a firewall and antivirus would not protect you from some of the critical flaws in windows that need updating.

That will do it. I didn't get to that page before! Many thanks.
  • Or slipstream using nLite and RyanVM and you can have an install CD with SP2 and all subsequent updates up to 14th August.
