Travel Insurance help where family members have health conditions.

We have a family holiday planned for next month. I have booked and paid for the flights but still have to book the rest. As we are four adult the total cost will be fairly significant.

We have annual family travel insurance and whilst none of us have any health conditions to worry about I have just noticed that we must inform them of any condition of family members that may cause a claim.

My husband and I both have elderly parents and whilst we are not fully aware of their health conditions we are aware that my mother was diagnosed with lung and heart conditions some 5-6 years ago. She has since been on medication and has been admitted to hospital for short stays on two occasions this year.

Today I contacted the insurance company to inform them but they would not take any details and informed me that insurance was just for 'unforseen circumstances' and that we would not be covered if we had to cancel or curtail our holiday for any family member with existing conditions. No discussion, no option of paying any extra supplement etc, just no cover.

Does anyone know if this is the same with all insurance companies?

Also, if I pay for the accomodation, car hire etc on my credit card, would that give us any cover if the insurance company refused to pay in the event of a claim?

Any help will be much appreciated.

I'm afraid this is pretty much standard practice with most insurers. I personally do not know of a company that would provide you with cover should anything happen to known unwell family members. It is just the fact that you know of a potential situation that could result in a claim.

I was all set to declare multiple PEMC's for elderly parents to Direct Travel Insurance, but they said they didn't need to know. All they asked was that we didn't know of any reason the holiday many be cancelled.

Now I haven't put this into practise so I have no idea how they would handle it if we did need to cancel or curtail a holiday due to the parents.

You wouldn't be able to use s75 in the event you cancelled/curtailed your trip (if that's what you mean).

Direct Travel only seem to insure up to age 75.
Anyone know of travel insurance for 78 year old woman diagnosed 2 years ago with breast cancer who wishes to go on a cruise round the british isles (including a stop in france). The breast cancer can be left out of the insurance as unlikely to cause problems when away.
Would E111 cover for this sort of holiday?

Suggest you start your own thread and you will get more help as your question is tacked at the end of someone elses.

In reply to your question, suggest you contact age concern and ask them.

My mum had breast cancer a couple of years ago and managed to get insurance from freedom insurance, I think they can cover up to 85 years old so might be able to help you.

Tokio Marine Insurance take the details of non travelling relatives as a 'Material Fact' and assess on a person by person basis. They also can offer increased cancellation cover.
