Membership fees paid, then gym closes.

My elderly mother paid her annual membership fees by credit card to her local gym three months ago. It's now closed without notice. Is she entitled to claim any of the money back, for the nine months she's lost? The gym was a franchise. Thanks for any advice.

Did she pay for 12 months in advance or did she pay a joining fee and then monthly for 12 months minimum ?

She's been going there for about ten years now, and pays every year in advance, £279.

She is covered under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Get on to the credit card company

Thank you both, I'll ring them now. I wanted to find out where she stood before I did. :)

They might not deal with you. Have your mother on hand to authorise you as her spokesperson.

I've spoken to them. She's quite hard of hearing and when he was asking her the questions she kept saying, "Hello? Hello? I'm sorry I can't hear you", so he was fine with that :D The department has finished for the weekend, but he gave me a direct number to ring on Monday. Thanks again for the advice.
