MOT test and Cambelt at Nationwide Autocentres

I am a regular Nationwide Autocentre customer, due mainly to Tesco vouchers! However, they took my diesel Alfa in for it's MOT, later ringing me to say it had failed, but they had also refused to do the emission test as they didn't know about it's cambelt history.
I enquired around and other garages are prepared to do this test as long as I am aware the cambelt may blow up on testing (it is due for replacement after 72,000 miles or 5 years - but I have only done 51,000 miles).
Although I will probably get the cambelt replaced, I was not very happy that Nationwide hadn't warned me about this before testing it, so I could choose what to do in advance.
Does anyone have a similar experience or any advice?

they should have phoned you to ask about cambelt history and if you are ok to proceed with test.
also if it did snap during the test theres no comeback on them anyway, numptys0 -
Has there been some change to the emission test?Last time I looked its just a probe up the exhaust while the engine ticks over.Nothing more risky than a double entendre.0
