Depends which smart car. Why not simply fill in an online insurance comparison form and see?0

if you go to www.parkers.co.uk it will give you lots of information about the car including mpg, insurance group, length, width, height, luggage capacity, fuel capacity etc..This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

A smart Pure coupe is a group 2. On its own that's meaningless as your driving history, parking situation and car value also go into the actuary's mix for underwriting0
-
It is not as simple as that. If you're insurance is fully comp and the smart car is much newer than the Micra then it will cost more because the risk is more.
Only way to know is to get some quotes.0 -
thanks for all the help its not as simple as i 1st thought ill get some quotes as suggested0

The groupings are not a reliable figure to estimate what your quote will be.
Going back a while now, 13 years (gulp).
It was cheaper to insure a 150mph rover 800 group 16 than a 1600cc XR3 group 13.
Also it was cheaper to insure a petrol MG montego turbo with approx 150bhp than a turbo diesel montego with 81bhp.
My diesel mondeo costs more to insure than the same petrol model despite being in the same insurance group (9)Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
i used to rely on parkers but apparently some car insurance companies use different insurance groups for cars
like i got a 1.4 2002 fiesta zetec (new shape - at the time) and parkers said it was insurance group 5 or something yet when i upated my insurance i had to pay an extra £120 on my premium because direct line told me on their system it was insurance group 25!!!!! when i said i thought it was 5 they said they used different groups - best thing to do is fill out the car insurance form online and keep putting different cars in and see what happens...0 -
There is new group ratings, i think something like group 8 old one is now group 18, it runs from 1 to 50 now. Thanks to all the competition posters.0

There is the old rating which is 1-20. And there is an ABI group rating which goes from 1 - 50.This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

Most of the time the ABI groups will be a pretty accurate indication of which cars will be more expensive to insure, but as others have pointed out, insurers generally use the ABI advisory groups as a starting point then adjust the groupings depending on their own experience.
Smart cars are actually a pretty good example of a car where the ABI groups can be a little misleading. Many insurers don't like Smart cars as the materials and repair techniques are non-standard and so they end up having to go to specialist garages for repairs which ends up costing a fortune.0
