Hello
I'm trying to find out which make and model of HDD is inside the HP Pavilion 6316uk. Tried their pre-sales telephone number and they passed me on to tech support who said I have to ask via their site's email unless I already own the product (!)
Have already asked them via their site and not had a reply.
My last resort is to hope somebody on here already owns one and can tell me what HDD is inside. It's 640gb and 7200rpm (3gb/s) so I'm thinking maybe WD Caviar Blue or Black?
My elderly HP died (RIP) 2 weeks ago and I desperately want a new one but there's so much choice out there in low-budget land, it's mind boggling.
thanks for reading.
PS
could any techy person tell me if it's OK to wipe the recovery partion of to get more storage space? Would obv. make a recovery dvd first, but just wondered if there's stuff on the partition that doesn't transfer to the dvd (like the OS). ta

it should say in device manager.
start > run > type devmgmt.msc and click ok > look under disk drives.
for vista (and later) type device manager into the search bar on the start menu0 -
Yes, I'm hoping somebody who has one can tell me.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0

Looked in the HP how-to manual for this model - don't know how reliable the images are, but it looks like a caviar blue.0

Thanks
I don't understand why it's such a big secret. I thought it would be a very simple question for their pre-sales enquiry staff. I know other firms use different components sometimes in the same models, but I heard that HP use the same parts for every PC of a particular model, IYSWIM. Perhaps I was misinformed about that, though.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Why do you want to know?
The recovery partition is handy to have, and takes up a small percentage of the drive, so not a good idea to delete it.
What happened to the old one?!!

Its quite possible they dont actually know the make / model of the drive, its not somthing id expect in the normal specification documents, but I dont think they would admit that they dont know which is probably why you're getting passed around.
Higher spec drives like caviar blacks will never be fitted to budget machines, or any normal machines really you have to specifically ask for them. (or fit yourself)0 -
Download the " Data Lifeguard Diagnostic " tool from the WD website. That will tell you the model / serial number of the drive.
OOps didnt read post properly, thought you already owned one.0 -
Thanks all for your replies
closed, I want to know because I've had a bad experience with a Caviar Green and don't want another one. The one I'm thinking of buying is described as 7200rpm, so doesn't sound like the Green, but sometimes these descriptions are wrong. My old one died weeks ago and was an elderly Maxtor (80gb). Thanks for advice about recover partition. I won't delete it.
