You need to figure out whether you have spare PCI slots inside your PC, a PCI sound (recommend Creative soundblaster £25+) card will always out perform a USB.

Don't consider USB unless you have no space for an internal card.

I do have a spare slot - be it low profile - so it seems the -

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio - coupled with the Creative Gigaworks T3 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System - is the way forward

I've always found the lower-mid range Logitech speakers very good performance/sound output for the price, have been happily rattling on with a set of Z-20s for a few years now but this is the current offering still getting multiple 5* reviews (go read some, I'd save your money and get a set of these):

(these are 50w speakers, the description is wrong on the site listing them as 25w)

you're probably wasting good speakers if you've only got a basic/standard sound card, although I'm possibly erring the other way with £25 speakers driven by my X-Fi titanium Championship series but I do hook it up to my TV surround sound system occasionally :)

Depends if the OP wants quality or surround sound. personally id go for quality over surround any day (Though ive gone for both for a long time now)

Honestly, you really want to consider a better card than that. The Asus Xonar DS is a much better buy. Infact, the entire Xonar range is far superior to the Creative one.

I'll second the recommendation for the Acoustic Energy Aego M speakers, they're fantastic.

I've heard good things about the Xonar range too, unfortunately I got my creative card just before they were launched :/
