Don't consider USB unless you have no space for an internal card.
I do have a spare slot - be it low profile - so it seems the -
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio - coupled with the Creative Gigaworks T3 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System - is the way forward

I've always found the lower-mid range Logitech speakers very good performance/sound output for the price, have been happily rattling on with a set of Z-20s for a few years now but this is the current offering still getting multiple 5* reviews (go read some, I'd save your money and get a set of these):

(these are 50w speakers, the description is wrong on the site listing them as 25w)

you're probably wasting good speakers if you've only got a basic/standard sound card, although I'm possibly erring the other way with £25 speakers driven by my X-Fi titanium Championship series but I do hook it up to my TV surround sound system occasionally

Depends if the OP wants quality or surround sound. personally id go for quality over surround any day (Though ive gone for both for a long time now):idea:0 -

Honestly, you really want to consider a better card than that. The Asus Xonar DS is a much better buy. Infact, the entire Xonar range is far superior to the Creative one.
I'll second the recommendation for the Acoustic Energy Aego M speakers, they're fantastic.0 -
