Have had some HB and council tax awarded but not full amount obviously as Im working now. I got the papers today and I do not have a clue what on earth they all mean. I see they have taken into account the amount given for JSA which should have stopped being paid months ago but Im still trying to sort that out with the jobcentre yet they dont seem in any hurry. The JSA is being used as "income" when it is not! And I dont understand the papers, they all look pretty much the same anyway and theres quite a few but it makes no sense! Does anyone know how you work these things out?
Thanks

Hi!
The letters are complicated as we have to notify you of all income etc!
However, if JSA is being used on your claim, it would indicate to me that you should get full HB unless it is JSA C (contribution based). If this isn't in payment, you need to confirm this to the office. Are you sure that it is on paperwork that relates to the current period?
The calculation is the same but depends on your circumstances, how much you get.
We take what income you have each week so wages, tax credits, etc.
We then make disregards for you if you are working - eg £25 for a lone parent in work.
We work out what the Govt say you need to live on (applicable amount) and take that off your income
This leaves you with a difference we call excess income.
You need to pay 65% of this towards your rent and 20% towards your Ctax.
Your rent may be restricted depending on size of accommodation etc!I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

Hi ...this happened too me ... i came off income support in october 09 and then submitted a new claim for HB and CTB with both my income and my new partners wage slips and things they asked took them three months to reply and at the bottom of the letter it stated 'Claim based on income support' i called them and said but i am no longer on it ... they asked again for all details again oh and again ... its sorted now so my advice to you is resend all your information in and record it to them i did everything i sent ..I would say do this else you will end up owing them !Have had some HB and council tax awarded but not full amount obviously as Im working now.
