Back in the 1970's, when firms switched from paying in cash to paying directly into the bank account, life was simple.
I would collect up the bills for the month and go into the bank with a wad of bills with their bank giro slips made out to pay them and a single cheque made out to cash.
That was it: a few stamps on the bills and their slips, a transfer into the save-as-you- earn best interest account and (say) 50 quid left in cash.
I was in charge and it was adios until this time next month.
Now it is a shambles of direct debits and a struggle to stay in charge of your own bank account.0
