Cancelling a holiday

This is kinda on-topic as it's to do with saving money, but I suppose it's also kinda off-topic!! So I apologise in advance if it's in the wrong place.
I've booked a holiday in Oct which is costing about £750. however I've read some bad reviews of the place we're staying. I've now looked and found we could get a holiday (although I haven't checked out the accommodation fully yet), for about £100 cheaper - if I can find a place that looks better, then I'd like to try and cancel the holiday I've booked.
It's one of these "make your own" hols where the flights and accommodation were booked on the one site but itemised on the bill.
Has anyone cancelled a holiday in this manner? I'm just wondering if I'd be penalised. I don't want to phone the company yet until I know what I want to do...
Any advice appreciated!!

almost definitely you will be penalised ...the only way to find out is look at the terms and conditions of your booking0

If you have paid in full you will almost certainly lose a good chunk of the cost It goes up the longer you leave it. Its something like 60% after 60 days or somethign like that. If you check the back of the brochure it will explain the cancellations chargesIf you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel0

You could always ask the company if you can make a change, you might incurr a fee, but at least you will end up staying somewhere you like.
It isn't always about moneysaving to make a successful holiday.0
