Hi guys, yesterday I bought one of those plastic Tomato growhouses from wilkinson,im planning on putting a growbag with 3 tomato plants in it...This got me thinking(doesnt happen often;).)
.Im already using the 4 tier plastic growhouse to protect my young tomato plants, and cucumber plants..but what could I actualy grow to maturity in this?,instead of it lying empty once ive transferred tomatoes and cucumbers into growbags..could I grow mixed salad leaves/lettuce/peppers/herbs in it?..I could remove some of the shelves for taller plants...just thinking it may be a good way to protect my salad type crops from bird poo, etc:rotfl:
All advice greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't grow salad stuff in there over the summer. I suspect they will bolt as it gets so hot in them even if it's a cloudy summer.
You could try a pepper in there in a large pot and remove a shelf or two.0 -
ive already burnt one lot of tomato plants in mine when its warmer weather it just gets far too hot, ive had to bring it all out during the day and put back in in the evening, not so bad at the mo where wether has changed:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0

:(Great question, I'm eagerly awaiting more answers. I have one standard tomato pland and two tumbling ones - these are supposed to be in hanging baskets but we don't have any. I was thinking I could put them on the top shelf of a mini greenhouse from Poundstretcher (£16.99 I think), and put my larger tom plant, my chilli plants and my peppers (if they germinate!) in there. Yum yum!
All our gardening is done in pots this year, as we live in military quarters and can't take up the turf
. This year I have:
cut & come again salads
beetroot
radishes
carrots - don't appear to have germinated yet, anyone know how long?
curly kale
pak choi - still to sow
peppers - waiting to germinate
coriander, basil, thyme, sage, chives, parsley - on windowsill
dill, marjoram - not germinated yet ??
chillies - just sprung up today in propagator :j
potatoes - chitted, going to plant in bags tomorrow - anyone know how deep to start them?
spring onions - not germinated yet
nastursiums - flowers for salad!
shallots, red onion sets - not planted yet
french beans - just popped up in propagator :j
I'm fairly new here as I'm usually on the Grocery Challenge board.

To start them off or grow permantly?
Carrots don't need to be in a greenhouse at all. They will be fine outside.
Spinach will probably bolt in the warmer weather - it does that easily enough outside in the summer. And really doesn't need to be in a greenhouse either.
Parsley - no idea as I grow it outside.
Peppers - perfect for them as long as you open it up every day.
Beetroot - again no idea as we grew them outside last year but I suspect they don't really need the heat from a greenhouse.
Someone with a bit more experience will no doubt be along to correct me.0 -
Someday someone is going to explain to me in words of no more than two syllables, why these plastic blowaway greenhouses work, what they work for and some reason they are of use.
They get way too hot during the day, so you have to open them, which then lets in the wind and rain, the whole point of having a cold greenhouse. They blowaway/down/over.
They do keep things a tiny bit warmer at night, but the covers don't last very long.
I'll admit the shelving can be useful after the cover breaks. But in reality, a cold frame is a much better option. Most people can also build one for nothing, or almost nothing.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
