Mitch, the tories would have lost whatever the number of seats.

350 seats would have seen - "yes, but they still didnt get more". 400 seats would have been "they lost really, they should have walked it". 420 seats - "they could have done better, even the greens got one seat, the tories lost there". This is evident from the masses of labour supporters trying desperately to say labour actually won....using the same theory, "they only lost 91 seats, they clearly won, it could have been worse". Check out Discussion Time for some of the dillusionists.

If they got the majority, it would boil down to the polls, and saying they didn't do as well as they were doing in the polls, therefore, they have lost.

Tories will never "win" or do good in anything, depending on the viewpoint of the person stating the tories lost.

I'd love for you to point me out any post that says Labour won - just for the laugh :D

If Labour and the Lib Dems joined forces - the extra 57 votes are not enough to make them the biggest force even with the support of the Northern Irish SDLP (who sat on the government benches in the last parliament) and the one new Alliance MP who is allied to the Lib Dems. Together that's 319 votes.

With the support of the nationalists from Scotland and Wales they would reach 330.

If the DUP joined too and the independent unionist and the new Green MP this alliance would have 338 votes in the Commons.

That would be one screwed up government!!

It would mean big concessions would have to made on protecting Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from public spending cuts, i.e. English voters get screwed over.

    .

Nonsence. No one disputed that the Torys won under thatcher or Major. The reason they didn't win this time is they didn't get a majority. Simplez.

What did Margaret Thatcher do to ruffle your feathers Hamish? .

    Nothing.

I have her biography on my desk, and have always voted Conservative.

Don't confuse my analysis of what is likely to happen, with what I want to happen.

The fact is that the Conservatives, under Cameron and Osborn, blew a 20% lead and lost the election.

Your attempts to spin that as a positive result are quite bizarre.

Obviously I'm missing something - I've read the first one and no one says that Labour won :(

Perhaps you could point me to the specific quote you had in mind when you said this?

Or are you saying that if someone says the Conservatives lost - they are automatically saying that Labour won?

Just to pin my colours to the mast - the LibDems lost - they were never going to win outright but they never achieved the surge of support that they were shown to have in the polls. They achieved mostly the same level of support as in 2005 but were hoping for much more.

Labour lost - for some reason Gordon Brown thought he had a chance at the election and by god he was more right than I was  Nevertheless they lost unless they can persuade almost everyone except the Conservatives to side with them.

The Conservatives lost - they had the biggest minority vote but not enough to give them a mandate to govern, bearing in mind what Labour's been up to over the last few years this is a miracle.

In terms of numbers - the Conservatives lost the least. In terms of expectation of performance the LibDems lost the most.

It's hard to spin that you won if you aren't talking about who's going to be in your next Goverment.

I'd go so far as to say that the labour campaign was a vinegar tainted success.

In terms of purely the campaign period, then Labour were by far the most successful. They started the campaign period facing a wipeout, people were predicting sub-200 seats. Over the 4 week period they managed to claw back vote share and have managed to win 258.

I guess re-looking at it, a lot are saying the tories lost, rather than specifically "labour won". There were so many threads on the election and who won on DT, it's hard to find the correct ones, but many of them said the same thing :)
