about 7 years ago the inland revenue contacted the council i work for and requested a list of all payments made to Landlords and the address's that the payments related to.
they initially wanted records year on year but have never been back to us since that very first year.0 -
You've every right to claim benefit and should be thinking about yourselves and not your landlord who sounds to be evading income tax.
However bear in mind that (depending on the type of tenancy agreement) he could easily evict. You need to know your rights before you make a move
By the way if he's so worried about the tax man ask him to reduce your rent to an amount where he wouldn't have to pay tax

I'd put in a claim anyway if your struggling financially, why should you care about his problems unless he is willing to lower your rent because of yours?
You would only be able to claim the LHA rate for a 2 bedroomed property though & would have to pay the extra money yourself.
Try this site, if you put in your postcode it gives the LHA rate for your area.

Probably the systems are linked or HMRC have access to it to pull off the information they need. I've read articles on this topic and it is clear that the LHA system is a primary source of info for them to identify landlords and check if they are submitting tax returns.0 -
Why even tell the landlord? When we claimed housing benefit, we just claimed it, providing the council with what they asked for - a copy of the lease. We were in this flat for four and a half years before we even met the landlord, i.e. we rent via a letting agency. What business is it of the landlord's how you pay your rent, as long as he gets what he is expecting?0
