New combi boiler quote. Fair price?

Options
Hi all,

We're looking into getting a new combi boiler system installed. We have a 3 bedroom house (2 adults + baby in about 6 weeks :)).

Two years ago, we got a quote from the same people to fit the new boiler in our bedroom where the current airing cupboard and cylinder is - their quote was for £2285 + vat.
This time around, we asked them to fit the new combi in the kitchen, where our existing boiler is (in an effort to cut cost as we thought it would be an easier job) but the price hasn't changed... They told us the reason is because Vaillant increased their prices twice in the past two years and copper is now more expensive....

This is the work that will be carried out for the price of £2285 + VAT:
  • Take out existing boiler & cylinder
  • Disconnect loft tanks - take out, if possible
  • Block up existing boiler flue and render patch onto wall
  • Chemically powerflush heating system
  • supply & fit new A-rated Vaillant condensing combi boiler 28Kw (11.5lt per min)
  • Repipe to suit new combi boiler
  • Extend gas pipework to new boiler
  • Supply & fit programmable timeclock and roomstat
  • Supply & fit 3 thermostatic radiator valves
  • Run condense pipe outside to drain point
  • Change house to run on mains pressure
  • Cap off upstairs hallway radiator under the floorboards
  • Test & commission system, issue building reg cert for boiler
  • Take rubbish away

Options: - supply & fit upgraded Wireless Honeywell CM927 timeclock: £140+vat
- supply & fit Magnaclean professional to system: £155+vat

- I am not sure which Vaillant boiler we are getting, can anyone tell by the info provided here? I'll ask otherwise. Is 28Kw not over the top?
- Also, I don't understand why gas pipe need to be extended if the new boiler goes where the existing one is?
- Do we need repiping to suit the new boiler? does this mean repiping around the whole house?
- They say they will supply 3 thermostatic radiator valves - there are 10 radiators in the house....
- How much might we save by cancelling the capping off of upstairs radiator under floorboard?
- Anything else I should query with them?

I am very confused and rather deflated as this is quite above our budget (especially with the options). My husband looked at the cost of Vaillant boilers, they seem to hover around £1250 - which means we would pay around £1500 for labour and other material?

Obviously, I want to pay a fair price for this job and at the moment, I am not convinced at all. What do you all think? Thank you

I got a Vailant fitted last month, £1900 all in to replace old boiler and cylinder. Plus getting £400 Government scrappage refund.

Thanks Barny, would you say your price was for like-for-like work though?

Unfortunately, we also found out last week that the scrappage scheme is not available any more :(

That price is not too bad as long as it includes an Ecotec Plus 831.

I would also think that the cm927 and magnaclean should be included at the price as well.

The gas pipe may well be too small for the existing boiler. Just because it was fitted like this years ago does not neccessarily make it right.

A combi is sized for hw use and not heating. The installer will range rate the boiler to suit your particular heating demand during commissioning.

They are correct about the price rises. Copper is going up almost weekly at present and vaillant boilers have gone up by nearly £200 (trade) in the past 2 years.

I would not recommend fitting a boiler in a main bedroom, especially if one of you is a light sleeper.

Ask your installer about a Broag Avanta Plus 28c. Roughly £250 cheaper, smaller, quieter and a lot better warranty.
  • So their offering you to do the the same work you asked for 2 years ago at the same price. And you think it's expensive? Raw material costs have gone up, just like the cost of living has. Some people want hi spec materials at low spec prices.

We recently had a Alpha combi installed in an adjacent room to where the current one was, had everything ripped out, including the old tank in the loft, all pipework outside and in, had a radiator ripped out and plumbing installed for a washing machine - more or less the same work as Barny 1979 above

    - £1650 inc, plus we're hoping to get the scrappage too, so £1250 :D

The guy who did the work I couldn't recommend enough, he's coming back to plumb in our new kitchen next month. Works in Sussex if anyone's interested

No mate, it's not the same job. First quote was to fit new boiler on the 1st floor in our bedroom. This quote is to fit it in the kitchen where the old boiler is. I'm not an expert but I would have thought that moving a boiler to the upper floor would involve more work and repiping.

Hey ho...thanks for your unhelpful comment anyway.

We have recently research into this and had quotes and yours does sound fair. Sorry to bring bad news.

Quite often the cheaper option can be to fit the boiler in the old airing cupboard, if it is on an outside wall.

You will have the hot and cold pipes already there and the ch pipes won't be far away. There will also be electric if you had an immersion in your cylinder.

The only harder part could be getting the gas pipe to it and if the airing cupboard is in the center of your property, a vertical flue would be needed.
