Astonishing but there was the closure of the steel plant (and much of the shenanigans regarding Tata and carbon credits hasn't been properly reported in the national media).

We are seeing traditional Labour voters willing to turn to Lib Dems in big numbers in specific northern constituencies where there are local issues (Burnley being another with the expenses scandal). Ironically the localised first-past-the-post system is helping the Lib Dems here.

Must be very close as the FT are still claiming Balls has held on:

4.33: Tim tells us political monitor Tweetminster thinks Ed Balls has hung on in Morley and Outwood.

edit: Sky claiming livewise on its live blog:

    4:40
    TWITTER_BREAKINGNEWS_LOGO_normal.jpgSkyNewsBreak:
Sky sources: Children's Secretary Ed Balls holds his seat in Morley And Outwood for Labour.

The Conservatives had a mountain to climb to get a majority at this election. It all goes back to that annihilation in 1997 (and not having Ken Clarke as their leader in 2001 and 2005.)

Yep, Ed Balls won :| . Odd how the BBC were the only media outlet to say he'd lost *insert conspiracy theory here*.
