Could be. But is it possible to maintain the network card in that state and still connect to the internet through it? 'Cos that's how we were connected.

    They're both independant

    ethernet network
    - If Plugged in and working - no icon
    - If Enabled and not working/not plugged in - icon visible with red cross and 'not connected' message
    - If disabled - no icon (only way to remove red cross icon when not plugged in is to manually disable it)

    wireless network
    - If 'connected; and working - wireless connected icon present
    - If enabled but not connected to anything - icon visible with red cross and 'not connected/unable to connect' message
    - If disabled - no icon (only way to remove red cross icon when not plugged in is to manually disable it)

The state one is in does not affect the other

Thinking about it, comparing the icons on the XP laptop, this has TWO icons, one for wireless, one for (Ethernet) network. Currently it is connecting using both the Ethernet cable AND the in-built wireless and is showing both icons as 'connected'.

The Vista PC never showed a 'wireless' icon, it was always the 'network' icon. Latterly it was the network+red cross, and reported 'Not Connected', but this did not stop it communicating with the internet via the Ethernet cable and the wireless router (as explained at the top).

I guess now we'll never know...

You'll excuse me if I don't join you...it took me several days (of evenings) to rebuild my PC to where it was before the disk died!
