  • What is causing you to go overdrawn? Have you asked if the bank will give you an authorised overdraft? We would need more info from you to advice you to be honest.

What PC is saying is what was the original reason for the account going into excess of the overdraft limit if there is one?
Was it one transaction such as a card payment or direct debit or credit card?

How can the bank cause you to go overdrawn? Do the people from behind their counter all have ninja training so they can break into your house at night and order really expensive pizzas with your bank card?

The bank's charges aren't helping but if you can cut back on spending for a month or two to get out of the zone you are in now then surely that will help. It's one thing to dip into your overdraft every now and again but if you do it all the time then you're living beyond your means.

I understand completely the problems you are having VictoriaZoe, my son is going through the same hell at the moment.
What originally set it off was a Direct Debit that he thought he had cancelled. It took him 72p overdrawn. He does not have an overdraft facility so straight away the bank charged him £5 closely followed by £38 and also a further fee of £25....a grand total of £68.......all for just 72p!!!!!!
Meanwhile his temporary job ended and he then had to claim Job Seekers Allowance, it was almost 6 weeks before he received his first payment from them, so once again more charges were added on to the previous charges and he then owed the bank a total of £136, from there it just snowballed and his benefit of £90 per fortnight made it impossible to clear the debt as quickly as it was rising.
He has sent numerous letters to his bank but even though he is clearly a hardship case they will not budge and just keep adding on more and more charges every month. The bill now is well over £500 and all for originally owing just 72p.
Fingers crossed he is hopeful that he will be accepted on a job after an interview a couple of days ago, but although he is willing to pay the 72p he owed plus the first lot of charges, he is adamant that hell will freeze over before he pays the rest!

Do you mean a Direct Debit went out and you did not have the money to cover it?

What is a weekly overdraft? Do you mean you get paid weekly and use £400 overdraft each week as well? Have you contacted your bank to see if there is anything you can do to avoid the charges or if they can refund some to at least bring you out of the unauthorised overdraft?
