Moving staircase

In order to make more room under the stairs for a cloakroom (toilet) I was wondering how big a project it would be to move the staircase so that it was less steep so making more room under it. There is a lot of room in the hallway you see, but not so much under the staircase. 1930's semi. I wouldn't want to completely change the position of the staircase, just modify it really to make more room under.

I don`t think this would be a cheap job. If you want to make the stairs less steep then you will need a new staircase made, or do you mean you just want to shift the existing staircase, making more space beneath and also there would be a some more landing space on top of the stairs? In either case you will need to check the head room as you walk up the stairs - if you do not have the minimum required then you would have to cut back the floor upstairs and possibly lose a chunk out of a bedroom. All the work related to this will add up...cutting joists laying floors, new plasterboard walls, patching ceilings etc. What sounds like a simple job could get complicated.

You need proper advice on what is possible in your house, you may be able to do it but I think it would cost a bit.

Might need to check that you can actually get a staircase that meets the necessary regs for step width and tread height etc (surely you would want it more steep to make more room or am I missing something here?)

Probably best to get a few builders views to see if any other way of doing it. pretty sure it won;t be a cheap job though

Any large cupboards or large rooms that you could utilise part of instead?

Thanks all. I'm thinking it's probably not the best idea. I'm just lost for ideas where to fit a cloakroom :( ..without spending 30k on a loft conversion or shrinking the already small kitchen.

    An escalator LOL.
